Bank Co-hosts Economic Development Summit in Scranton

As communities in our region age and struggle with change, it’s important for leaders to understand issues that affect the economic health of their communities and search for solutions that help them grow.

That’s why the Bank co-hosted a half-day regional economic development summit with U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski (PA-11) on August 7 in Scranton. The event aimed to bring together a diverse set of leaders in the field of economic development to discuss the regional economy of northeastern Pennsylvania communities, current challenges and opportunities in economic development and tools that are available to aid in the region’s infrastructure development and economic growth.

FHLBank Pittsburgh President and CEO John Price made introductory remarks at the forum, saying, “At FHLBank Pittsburgh, we recognize these challenges, and we stand ready to work in partnership with our member banks and community leaders to help meet them going forward.”

Rep. Kanjorski praised the work of the Bank as a partner in economic development in northeastern Pennsylvania. He said that the problems communities face are not unsolvable and pointed to the revitalization of Scranton, a city once on the “precipice of failure.”

Held at the University of Scranton’s Brennan Hall, the summit saw participation of area mayors, chambers of commerce, municipal planners, bankers and representatives of area nonprofits.

Also representing the Bank at the summit were Marshal Auron, Business Research and Development; John Bendel and Bill Joseph, Community Investment; John Foff and Larry Swingle, Member Market Access; and Peter Knight and Bill Miller, Government Relations.

The economic development summit brought together partners in an atmosphere of mutual cooperation, which will hopefully result in positive change throughout the region.
