First Front Door Success Stories

After living in a trailer home for 15 years, Dave and Shannon Lemine of Morgantown, WV decided it was time to find some growing room.

Actually, it was their kids who required it. The couple hadn’t planned on kids, but along came Philip, now 5, and Abby, now 7, making even a three-bedroom trailer too close for comfort.

Applying for FHLBank’s First Front Door program, Dave, then ill and unemployed, found that his family qualified for the maximum $5,000 grant to help them defray some of the costs associated with buying a three bedroom, split level home with a fully equipped kitchen.

“I’ve happened to start over several times in my life,” said Dave. “This has been a real godsend. And the kids love it. They think it’s great.”

To qualify for First Front Door, the Lemines participated in homebuyer education classes provided by the area housing authority, which strongly supports the grants program.

“Not only have program recipients responded in positive fashion, our community partners have as well,” remarked Lisa Beall, the mortgage community reinvestment officer at WesBanco, the FHLBank member that helped the Lemines apply for the grant. “Through community outreach, we promote the program to government entities, homebuyer education providers and others. This has made it possible for us to provide access to a great program and to see a large increase in interest.”

“Owning is cheaper than renting,” concluded Dave Lemine. “I like homeownership because I get back everything I put into it.”
