Habitat Lehigh Valley’s James Street Development Welcomes First-time Homeowners

The first five homes in a new 40-home development located on James and 7th streets on the Southside of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, welcomed first-time low-income homeowners on Thursday, April 16, 2009. Local dignitaries including Mayor John Callahan, Congressman Charlie Dent and numerous community partners marked the occasion at a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which also coincided with Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley’s 20th anniversary.

Former Meadville School Closes the Book on Sitting Empty – Transformed into Affordable Housing and Commercial Office Space

After sitting empty nearly ten years, the former Meadville Area Junior High School closed the book on vacancy for good in the fall of 2007. The 90-year-old building received new life when it was transformed into a 56-unit residential apartment complex for low- to moderate-income families as well as a commercial office facility. Located at 847 North Main Street in the historic district of Downtown Meadville, Pennsylvania, the building boasts more than 150,000 square feet of much-needed space.

17-year-old Ennis Davis of Clairton, PA is doing double duty educationally these days. The Clairton High School junior puts in a full day at school and then, once a week, heads down to Neighborhood Housing Services of Allegheny County for the advanced class of My Money, My Life, the free financial literacy program founded by FHLBank Pittsburgh in 2004 for the benefit of at-risk young adults.

But when the gutter piece he was holding touched electrical wires, the shock caused serious burns and threw Barry eight feet to the ground. Tragically, the accident also led to Barry’s paralysis from the waist down.
