My Money My Life Success Stories

17-year-old Ennis Davis of Clairton, PA is doing double duty educationally these days. The Clairton High School junior puts in a full day at school and then, once a week, heads down to Neighborhood Housing Services of Allegheny County for the advanced class of My Money, My Life, the free financial literacy program founded by FHLBank Pittsburgh in 2004 for the benefit of at-risk young adults.

Now working part-time at McDonald's to help bring in some extra cash, Ennis says she's managing her money more wisely since she signed on for the beginner's class of My Money, My Life in the spring of 2007. "I did not manage my money at all," the 11th-grader remembers.

The six-week beginner's class was a "very, very good learning experience" that taught her the basics of savings, budgeting and investing, the soft-spoken sister of seven states, adding that the fee-free savings account she opened upon graduation currently has more than $200 in it - more than double the initial complimentary deposit for completing the class.

Enrolling in the advanced class of My Money, My Life that just got under way, Ennis believes this second phase of her money management training is even more helpful. "This one gets more specialized," she reports. "We talk more about our first car and college, real things that are happening with us right now. We will budget for these things, which are coming up shortly."

My Money, My Life aims to graduate at least 1,000 at-risk 16-to-19-year-olds from the beginner's class by the end of next year. Ten beginner's classes and three advanced classes are taking place during 2008.

To sign up for a class, call NHS program administrator Karen Derzic at 412-281-1100, ext. 121.
