HUNTINGTON FEDERAL PRESIDENT HONORED FOR COMMUNITY
COMMITMENT; SPECIAL AWARD CITES MAURICE CLARK'S ROLE
IN CREATING AFFORDABLE HOUSING
PITTSBURGH, PA, June 20, 2005
J. Maurice Clark, president of Huntington (WV) Federal
Savings Bank, today received a special award from the
Affordable Housing Advisory Council of the Federal Home
Loan Bank of Pittsburgh (FHLBank) for his lifelong commitment
to affordable housing and community investment.
Each year, the Affordable Housing Advisory Council,
which serves the Bank and its Board of Directors, selects
an individual who exemplifies the FHLBank of Pittsburgh's
vision of placing a safe, warm home and steady work
within the grasp of every person. The FHLBank, a wholesale
bank created by Congress to provide a steady stream
of low-cost funding for housing, has approximately 340
member financial institutions across Delaware, Pennsylvania
and West Virginia. Clark received the special Council
Award at a regional gathering of FHLBank members in
Pittsburgh.
"Once a year, we honor a single individual among
the leadership of our members whose relentless devotion
to affordable housing and community building stands
out from the pack," said John J. Bendel, director
of Community Investment for the Bank. "As president
of Huntington Federal since 1992, Maurice Clark has
set the standard for support of affordable housing and
community investment across his bank's service area."
Huntington Federal has extended thousands of mortgage
loans since its founding in 1934. Using the FHLBank
of Pittsburgh's Affordable Housing Program (AHP), it
has also distributed more than $1 million in grants
and other low-cost funding to create a more abundant
supply of clean, safe and affordable rental or for-sale
housing at more than one dozen locations across Huntington
Federal's marketplace.
AHP funding distributed by Huntington Federal supports
ten rental housing projects in Charleston, Fort Gay
and Huntington as well as for-sale housing at four locations
in Huntington. Specific projects include Huntington
High Renaissance, Thompson School Elderly Apartments
in Fort Gay, the Huntington City Mission, Assaley Place
Apartments in Charleston, Huntington Area Habitat for
Humanity construction and other affordable housing development.
Under Clark's leadership, Huntington Federal has received
numerous awards and recognition for its support of housing
projects for the homeless, low-income and elderly and
has participated with other local financial institutions
in civic and community development initiatives. Personally
active in civic affairs, Clark is a member of the Marshall
University College of Business Advisory Board, the Huntington
Area Development Council Executive Committee, the Huntington
Regional Chamber of Commerce Board, Huntington Rotary
Club and the Cabell-Huntington Coalition for the Homeless.
Maurice Clark joined Huntington Federal in 1972 as a
loan officer. He graduated from Huntington East High
School in 1964 and entered the U.S. Army in 1966, serving
with the Fourth Infantry Division in Vietnam. He is
a graduate of Marshall University, receiving a bachelor
of business administration degree in 1975.
Huntington Federal Savings Bank operates five offices
at Camden Road, East Hills, Huntington Mall, Putnam
Village and a main office at 1049 Fifth Avenue in downtown
Huntington.
Originally established in 1932 to provide a steady
stream of low-cost housing finance to its membership,
the FHLBank of Pittsburgh has expanded its mission in
recent years to include financing for business startup
and expansion and a variety of community and economic
development projects. The Bank is one of twelve FHLBanks,
all private cooperatively owned banks using private
capital for a public mission.
