CONGRESSMAN FATTAH, FIVE BANKS TO UNVEIL $3 MILLION IN GRANTS FOR EIGHT AREA AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS
Low-income renters, buyers to include single mothers, elderly, handicapped

PHILADELPHIA, PA, August 14, 2006 — U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah (PA-2) will be the keynote speaker this Wednesday when five area banks announce $3 million in grants for the construction or rehabilitation of 230 units of affordable housing serving a wide variety of low-income occupants ranging from single mothers and their children to those with physical and mental disabilities to the elderly.

The announcement will take place Wednesday, August 16, at 10 a.m. at Saunders Park adjoining Rowan House (People's Emergency Center) at 325 N. 39th Street, at the corner of Baring and 39th streets. The event will also include remarks by Gloria Guard, president of People's Emergency Center, and Rev. Luis A. Cortés Jr., president of Esperanza USA, and feature individual check presentations to a variety of neighborhood organizations. Dozens of leaders from Philadelphia's public and private sectors as well as officials of FHLBank Pittsburgh, part of the Federal Home Loan Bank System, will also attend the event, which is expected to conclude at 11 a.m.

Directions:

From Center City
Go west on Walnut Street to 38th Street. Turn right (north) on 38th and go to the third light. Turn left onto Powelton Avenue. Turn right on the first street, Saunders Street. Saunders Park is on your left and Rowan House is at the northwest corner of the park. Turn left onto Baring Street and left into the driveway.

From West Philadelphia
Take Chestnut Street east to 38th Street, then turn left. Go to the second light. Take a left onto Powelton Avenue. Turn right onto the first street, Saunders Street. Saunders Park is on your left and Rowan House is at the northwest corner of the park. Turn left onto Baring Street and left into the driveway.

From the suburbs:
Take the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76 E) toward Philadelphia to the Spring Garden Street exit. At the top of the exit ramp, turn right heading west onto Spring Garden Street. Go two blocks to the light and turn left. Go two blocks and turn right onto Baring Street. Follow Baring Street to Saunders Park, which will be on the left. The Rowan House driveway is between Saunders and 39th streets on Baring Street.

Parking:
Media parking will be available in the circular drive of Rowan House fronting the public park where the event will be held. Additional on-street parking will also be available. Street guides will assist visitors in finding parking spaces.
